Henry Robert Gordon
Henry Robert Gordon was born on 18th March 1892, at a time when the Manar Estate was suffering from increasing financial problems. His father, Henry Gordon of Manar, had poor financial judgment, managing to run a successful and remunerative estate into debt. The family moved to London (though the Estate was not sold until 1946), and Gordon of Manar became a recruiting officer during the First World War, frequenting London clubs. However, by the 1920's his life was much diminished from the wealth and status he had inherited. In contrast, his son and heir, Henry Robert Gordon gained respect and reputation, as an invalided officer in the Great War (he fought in the East Kent (the Buffs) Regiment and was wounded more than once: the first time at Railway Wood near Ypres, and later when he was severely wounded at Loos-en-Gohelle in the Battle for Arras on 9th April 1917 on the same day the Canadians took the Vimy Ridge - as a result of the wounds he lost his left arm and shoulder); he was also respected for a key role at Ashridge House when it was turned into an emergency hospital in World War II, for which he was awarded the O.B.E. His approach was scholarly and assiduous, and he spent long hours reading and writing in a large private library. Works included 'A Rambler's Companion' and 'A History of Ashridge'. In 1918 he had married Kathleen Langston, whose father had studied at Oxford and worked as a Tax Inspector in Edinburgh and Aberdeen; and whose mother was from the iron foundry owners, the Watts of Macclesfield. Miss Langston - Kathleen Gordon as she became - had studied Cookery in Edinburgh, and was also a champion dog breeder. Their eldest son Henry Langston Gordon (Sandy) was sadly killed in Burma in 1944 serving in the Gordon Highlanders and then the Gloucesters. His younger son Leslie Gordon flew in Lancasters in World War Two, and daughters Barbara and Sheila - 'The Gordon Twins' - worked at Bletchley Park on the 'Enigma' machines. He also had a daughter 'Boodles' (Kathleen) who had an enthusiasm and expertise in antiques, and a surviving daughter Jean who lives in Argyll, and is a well-known dog-breeder and show-judge like her mother. Henry Robert Gordon's family continues to thrive with at present about 35 surviving descendants. Summarised by Susannah Clark, 10th April 2018 (Grandchild of Henry Robert Gordon)

Henry Robert Gordon at the outset of World War I
Henry Gordon lost an arm at Mons in the First World War. In the 1930's he was at Ashridge House, near Berkhamsted, in Hertfordshire
Huts were rapidly built in front of Ashridge House, and wards were furnished, so hospital services from Charing Cross and University College hospitals could be provided outside the main area
of London in the Blitz. There were 1200 hospital beds, and the emergency hospital also served as a training centre for 30 medical students a year from Charing Cross Medical School.
For his work during the War Henry was awarded the O.B.E. His eldest son Sandy was in the Gordon Highlanders and killed in Burma. His son Leslie flew in Lancasters with the RAF.
His daughters Barbara and Sheila worked at Bletchley Park. After the War, Henry Gordon wrote a History of Ashridge which you can read here on the Manar website.
