Lt-Commander Francis Gordon Brickenden Francis Gordon Brickenden was born in Stockport on 19th January 1883, the son of James Gordon Brickenden (a civil engineer), and the grandson of Robina Gordon who was born at Manar. His father died in 1887 at the age of 39, and he was raised by his mother, Alianora. At the time of the 1891 census they were living in Leamington, Warwickshire along with his two sisters. He enlisted in the Royal Navy and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1905. He went on to captain HMS Taku from January to August 1912, and then to captain the destroyer HMS Handy. Brickenden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1913, and later captained HMS Montbretia and HMS Gorgon. He married Doreen Grace Florence Scott, and had one son William Francis Brickenden, born in Castletown, Ireland, on 21st March 1918. By 1926 he had left the Royal Navy and was living in Gorey, Ireland. He died on 1st March 1959 in Arklow, County Wicklow, and was buried in Gorey Churchyard, County Wexford. On his tombstone we learn that he lived at Friary Farm, Coolgreaney.
