The Gordons of Manar in Australia Edward William Leslie Gordon Edward William Leslie Gordon, son of James Gordon, was born in Young on 30 May 1877. After working for a few years as a clerk with the Bank of Australasia, he went jackerooing in 1895. He spent a year in 1902 working for William Forbes Gordon at Manar and then started acquiring a number of properties in the Young district, including Glensloy which remains in the family. A successful grazier, he was a member of a number of organisations involving sheep and wool growing, including the NSW Graziers Association and the Young Pastoral and Agricultural Society. Like his father, he was involved in many civic duties in Young and he also served as President of the Young District Hospital. Edward died at Goulburn on 22 November 1965, having married at Crafters, SA, on 2 November 1904, Lucy, daughter of Alan McFarlane of Wellington Lodge, Lake Alexandrina. She was born on 29 December 1877 and died on 26 January 1978 at the age of 100. They had: 1. James Allan Gordon was born at Marrickville, NSW, on 7 November 1906 and educated at the King's School. He became a successful grazier and took over Glensloy on his father's death in 1965. Allan, as he was known, died on 16 January 1990, having married at Darling Point in Sydney on 11 January 1950, June Anne Merewether, who was born on 15 November 1919. They had: _ _ _ _(i). James Allan Merewether, born 15 March 1955 and educated at the King's School, a grazier at Glensloy. He married in 1986, Nicola Gordon, who emigrated from Scotland in that year. and they have: 1. James Allan Robert, born 15 July 1987. 2. Emma Kirsten, born 26 July 1989. 3. Arabella, born 3 July 1991. 4. India, born 21 July 1993. _ _ _ _(ii). Elizabeth Anne, born 15 April 1953, married on 4 November 1978, John Snodgrass, a stock and station agent in Yass, NSW. 2. Richard Edward, born 7 August 1911 and educated at the King's School. He managed a number of properties before acquiring Manton near Young in 1949. Dick, as he was known, served with the RAAF in the 2nd World War and was a flying instructor in the UK till 1944 when he transferred to Transport Command, flying mainly DC-3s. He was discharged late in 1945. Dick died at Wombat, NSW, on 6 November 2002, having married at Parramatta on 6 March 1946, Isobel Beatrice Killen, who was born in 1914 and died on 3 January 1991. They had: _ _ _ _(i). Richard Edward Killen, born on 13 April 1949 and educated at the Kings School from 1958 to 1967. He was called up during the Vietnam War and underwent a year's training which included parachuting. After serving in Vietnam he attended agricultural college and then went to manage the family property, Manton. He undertook a chiropractic course in Melbourne before commencing practice in Young. Richard married, on 13 December 1980, Susan Catharine Knight, from Deniliquin. They have: 1. Tom Knight, born 10 September 1983. 2. Sam Knight, born 10 January 1985. 3. Catharine, born 21 July 1986. _ _ _ _(ii). Jane Lyle, born 1 March 1952, married on 26 February 1977, Gordon Alexander Durnford. 3. Lucy Elizabeth, born at Burwood on 29 June 1909, died on 25 October 2006. She married at Young on 17 December 1932, Clive Harold Milson of Cardross, Goulburn.
